September 30, 2012, members of DCIS gathered to plant a memorial tree to our recent past President, Alfred C. Palmer, who passed away on May 19, 2012.
Al sprouted the seedling from an acorn that he collected from the 300-year old Bur Oak* at Collen Brook Farm, the former home of Dr. George Smith, the first DCIS president.
The planting Site was Mineral Hill, a place Al loved and to which he often took students and members of the Institute of Science.
On November 11, 1938, members of DCIS & the Leidy Microscopical Society met to plant 2 memorial Mossycup Oak* trees to George Liddon Pennock, fourth President of DCIS and member of the LMS, who passed away on December 30, 1937.
The trees were raised by Samuel Pennock of Lansdowne, George’s brother
The planting site was the old Sellers property on State Road in Upper Darby (became UD Library)
